Iodine
- Essential for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine
and thyroxine) which are required for the normal growth and development of young mammals,
including humans.
- Involved (as elemental iodine) in the modulation of estrogen action on breast tissue.
- Health benefits: Adequate daily intake prevents hypothyroidism
(the development of an enlarged thyroid gland, usually referred to as goiter), promotes healthy
hair, nails, skin and teeth.
- Best food sources: seafoods, onions, vegetables grown in iodine-rich soil.
